Dear
Thanksgiving is a time of being with family and friends and celebrating the things we are grateful for. CareSource is grateful to our dedicated and passionate staff that ensures the safety and well being of our clients. We are most appreciative to our volunteers who give of their time and talents to help us help others. Our Friendly Visitor volunteer Mark Kahn was honored, along with 61 other community volunteers, at the Hands On Broward Heart of the Community Volunteer Recognition Dinner. An additional eight new Friendly Visitor volunteers have joined our team to provide visits and hair cutting services to our clients who have no family or friends. We thank each of them for giving of their time to make a difference. To our generous donors who help us protect our pro bono clients, we share our gratitude for all that you do.

CareSource’s staff, volunteers and Board of Directors hope each of you had a Happy Thanksgiving.

Regina had a wonderful marriage to a doctor. They had no children so when he passed away she moved to an independent living facility. Regina, a social organizer, was known to have a very strong personality and every day would go to the chef to plan the dinner menu and give him her table seating list. Over time, she began to decline due to Alzheimer’s and could no longer live independently. She moved to a skilled nursing facility and CareSource became her legal guardian. Alzheimer’s mellowed Regina. She is always traveling with her husband on a cruise or taking a train somewhere. CareSource and the caregivers at the facility maintain a strong team approach to ensure she is well taken care of. Regina's nephew, who lives in North Carolina and visits every few months, is grateful to CareSource’s dedicated staff that makes sure she is always safe.

L.T. age 47, was homeless and living on the streets of Broward County when CareSource was approached to assist her. LT suffers from mental illness and had been estranged from her family for years. Since our intervention, she is safely housed in a supportive assisted living facility, is receiving regular medical treatment to stabilize her heart condition and therapeutic services to moderate her psychiatric condition, and is happy. She has visited her children, acquired a cell phone and attends church regularly on Sundays. LT just moved to be closer to her daughter.

LT is just one of the vulnerable individuals we serve on a pro bono basis. This year for the first time, CareSource has a waiting list of pro bono clients in need of our services. It is only with donations from generous supporters like you that we are able to continue our work of preventing abuse, neglect and exploitation of our helpless citizens.

With the many charitable requests you will receive this holiday season, please consider supporting CareSource so we can continue our work to protect those who have nowhere else to turn for help.

You can make a donation, ask your employer to match your gift and/or do your online shopping using the CareSource iGive link located in the side bar.

Every dollar we receive stays in our community and every gift, regardless of size, enables CareSource to rescue susceptible individuals from financial exploitation, restore institutionalized persons to independent lifestyles and reconnect isolated persons with long lost family and friends.

Stella has been with CareSource since 2003 serving as a Care Manager and Senior Care Manager before becoming Director of Care Management in 2009. She supervises our Care Managers and associate staff of the department. Stella has a Medical Assistant’s Degree and has returned to school to get her RN degree. Prior to working at CareSource she spent 12 years in the healthcare field as a Certified Medical Assistant, X-ray technician, Lab Manager and Office Manager in a medical office. “The greatest aspect of my job at CareSource is acting as a bridge for our clients so they can tap into the resources that are available to them. Whether it’s to facilitate continuity of medical care, coordinate a homecoming and even arrange a family reunion. CareSource is the one constant voice for our clients.

Many are unable to express themselves due to their disability. Seeing a smile on our clients’ faces and assisting them with providing a sense of independence is all the reward I need.” Stella’s kindness, gentleness, and willingness to always help others is one of her greatest assets that is always appreciated by family members, clients, co-workers and community partners. She is a true example of what “caring” is about.

In the United States alone there are nearly 15 million Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers.
No two people experience Alzheimer's disease in the same way. As a result, there's no one approach to caregiving.
Vist Alzheimer’s Association for available resources and support and to honor caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s.

The focus of hospice care is on meeting the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals who are terminally ill, while fostering the highest quality of life possible.

Families are the major provider of long-term care, but research has shown that caregiving exacts a heavy emotional, physical and financial toll. The National Family Caregivers Association educates, supports, empowers and speaks up for the more than 50 million Americans who care for loved ones with a chronic illness or disability or the frailties of old age.

“Talk Turkey” is an annual Advance Directive Campaign held the week of Thanksgiving at Beth Israel Medical Center in Massachusetts to increase both staff and patient awareness of the importance of Advance Directives which provides for the designation of a Health Care Proxy or agent. As you share time with family and friends consider “Talking Turkey”.
