We Prevent Exploitation…Imagine your elderly Aunt Mae has no children. She lives alone, can no longer drive and her lawn man offers to drive her as long as she pays for the gas. After a few months, he tells her his car needs new tires, but he can't afford them, asks her to pay and she agrees, because he is her only connection to the store, the doctor, etc. A few more months go by and the nice lawn man announces he was in an accident and his car was totaled, but he found a good deal on a new car, except he doesn't have the down payment. Before long, Mae is paying his rent, buying his food, putting him on her bank account. |

Fiscal Literacy & Independence Project improves the fiscal stability of program participants through protective financial services to ensure clients safety and reduce the risk of exploitation, eviction, bankruptcy and/or homelessness. There are two components to the project:
Community Outreach provides protective financial services which allow residents in targeted cities to foster their independence while maintaining the proper safeguards as it relates to the use of their assets. Financial Specialists teach individuals how to automate and set up daily money management tasks. Services include one-on-one counseling, assistance with identifying and applying for benefits and entitlements and training workshops provided in partnership with city government community service programs. Daily Money Management services begin with a referral from a financial professional, a family member, and/or a non-profit or government agency. A meeting is scheduled to assess the client's current situation and an action plan is designed and implemented. Services can include:

- Analysis of potential benefits and processing of applications
- Assistance in court appeals
- Daily money management
- Bill paying services
- Organize paperwork, including tax documents
- Entitlements and benefits counseling, such as Social Security, Medicaid, or VA benefits
- Medical and insurance claims processing
- Representative payee, trustee, or corporate fiduciary representation
